The Margarete Steiff GmbH is one of the most renowned manufacturers for toys and stuffed animals worldwide. In 2016 the photographer Hannes Rohrer was granted the exclusive opportunity to document the company’s history-steeped factory in Giengen, Germany. The documentation reaches from the historically unique industrial buildings from the year 1903 to a systematical depiction of every department and its employees, serving as an extensive inventory for the traditional manufacturer.
Aiming to create a most complete archive, we developed a structure for the resulting images in close cooperation with the photographer. The introduction to the book is made by architectural photographs of the factory buildings, defining the order in which the departments are documented. Each chapter, focussiong on a single department of the factory, begins with a monochrome group portrait of the employees. A number of double spreads depict details and overviews, giving an insite into the staffs work environment. The sober composition of the images as well as the simple ring binding highlight the archival character of the book. The result of this project is a book that gives the viewer a unique insight behind the scenes of the traditional company Steiff and the process of manufacturing of the famous stuffed animals. The publication was honored the award Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung 2016 by Stiftung Buchkunst.
